Just a scenic 2.5-hour drive from Los Angeles, Joshua Tree is located in the Mojave Desert of southeastern California. Joshua Tree had been on my to-visit list for a while because I wanted to see more of the United States; I grew up around skyscrapers and subways, and while I tried my best to get my fill of forest and ocean time, I had not yet been to the desert in the US. I also wanted a little relaxation time. I find peace and quiet outside New York City in Los Angeles, but I wanted to take it further!
One sunny Friday mid-October afternoon, my partner and I packed up the car and set out on an adventure through the desert to spend a long weekend relaxing in a spacious, boho-chic Airbnb. We debated whether staying at a hotel would’ve been a better option, but we loved the freedom our Airbnb gave us; we cooked our meals, we star-gazed in the hammocks located in the massive backyard area, he taught me how to play bocce ball, and we made use of the grill and fire pit. It was the perfect home away from home. It also made for a unique artistic retreat where we experimented with our DJ skills, did desert photoshoots for our creative ventures, and crafted creative meals and cocktails. It’s your adventure, and it’s truly what you make it!
Being able to relax and unwind in a beautiful home in Joshua Tree was an experience in itself for me, but if some days are pulling you to venture out, here are four places I recommend visiting:
Joshua Tree National Park
The park is a must-visit! Maybe I was so excited because I’d never been to the desert or a national park before, but experiencing a sense of awe and wonder is a good enough reason to do something! Joshua Tree National Park is gorgeous… it’s visually interesting and offers a true sense of peace. You can have many different experiences at the park— a short and easy hike, a more challenging walk to the top of the fascinating rock formations, or just catching an Instagrammable moment at the various points of interest.
Mesa Market Convenience Store
Mesa Market was the closest convenience store to our Airbnb— we were literally in the middle of nowhere— but I have a feeling that this taco truck parked right outside is probably one of the area’s best-kept secrets. After picking up some supplies from the convenience store, we paused and asked ourselves if we should get some tacos from the truck. A local leaving the store told us, “Yes,” and that was enough of a sign for us. I love juicy carne asada with tons of onions and cilantro, and these tacos definitely delivered! The sauce offered was a perfect compliment. I still think about those tacos occasionally. Mesa Market is located at 3254 Yucca Mesa Rd, Yucca Valley, CA 92284
Kitchen in the Desert
Another of our favorite things is trying new restaurants. During a Google search, I found Kitchen in the Desert, located in nearby Twentynine Palms, and fell in love with its unique look. On top of that, I saw they had Jerk Chicken and waffles on the menu. Honestly, it’s hard to find Caribbean food in California that gives me the flavor I’m used to. Still, I’m always down to sample and give restaurants a chance! The Jerk chicken from Kitchen in the Desert is some of the best I’ve had visiting the Golden State; it was flavorful but not too spicy, and the drinks were super refreshing after some exploration and light hiking around Joshua Tree National Park. Kitchen in the Desert is located at 6427 Mesquite Ave, Twentynine Palms, CA 92277
‘Transmission’ Sculpture by Daniel Popper
I’ve always thought that roadside attractions and art were so fun and eclectic, but I’d also have yet to visit one up close and personal. The location of this one is a little tricky; there’s lots of driving on desert backroads, but once you find your way, the sculpture is a fantastic sight! ‘Transmission’ Sculpture by Daniel Popper is located at 2015 Sunfair Rd, Joshua Tree, CA 92252
Joshua Tree was the quick life refresher I needed. The weather was perfect; the best time to visit is March through May and October through November, as it’s way too hot in the summer months. And one other major thing I love about Joshua Tree is all of the stars at night. I’d never seen so many stars in one place, and I was finally able to achieve one of my goals/satisfy my curiosity by capturing a photo of the Milky Way!
